Northeast New Mexico Correctional Facility Overview
Northeast New Mexico Correctional Facility is operated by the New Mexico Corrections Department, commonly shortened to NMCD. The official NMCD facility page places the prison near Clayton and identifies it as a state prison with Level 2, Level 3, and Restrictive Housing Unit custody. The facility page inspected during research listed Warden John W. Beaird and Deputy Warden Cecilia Baker.
The prison is physically in Union County, but it does not serve the same function as Union County Detention Center. A person recently arrested in Union County may start in county custody. If convicted and sentenced to state prison, that person can later enter NMCD custody, go through reception and classification, and be assigned to a state facility such as Northeast New Mexico Correctional Facility. Once state custody begins, the Union County Sheriff's Office is no longer the controlling lookup source for prison location, visitation, mail, or money.
The NMCD annual report describes the Clayton prison as a 179,624-square-foot facility that was originally private and came under State of New Mexico operation in 2019. NMCD also says the facility was built in 2007 and offers educational and reprogramming opportunities.
The official NMCD facility page is the source for the Clayton state prison's current name, address, phone, leadership, and security-level description.
This image belongs with the state-prison page because it points to the NMCD facility profile, not a Union County jail roster or county booking page.
Northeast New Mexico Correctional Facility Capacity and Population
No current facility-specific capacity count was found on the official NMCD facility page, so the page should not state a current bed capacity unless NMCD later publishes one. The sourced facility size is 179,624 square feet from the NMCD 2021 annual report. Prison Policy Initiative correctional-population data compiled from BJS/Census sources lists the older "Northeast New Mexico Detention Facility" name with 609 prisoners for a June 30, 2012 survey date. That figure is historical census/BJS-source context, not a current NMCD operating count.
Statewide NMCD figures can provide background but should not be turned into a facility count. The NMCD 2021 annual report reported Adult Prisons Division capacity of just under 7,800 and a 2021 daily average prison population of 5,821. New Mexico Sentencing Commission data describes statewide prison demographics and forecasts, not a Union County jail count and not a current Northeast New Mexico Correctional Facility census.
| Measure | Figure | Use with care |

| Historical population | 609 prisoners | BJS/Census-source survey date June 30, 2012; not a current count |

How to Look Up an Inmate at Northeast New Mexico Correctional Facility
Use NMCD Offender Search or the embedded app at search.cd.nm.gov for Northeast New Mexico Correctional Facility. Do not use a Union County jail roster for this prison. NMCD states that its offender information covers people incarcerated or on probation/parole supervision and that NMCD does not have jurisdiction over county or city detention facilities. Adult Prisons Division information updates nightly, while probation and parole information updates in real time.
- Open NMCD Offender Search or the NMCD search app.
- Search by last name, first name, or numeric NMCD offender number.
- Use the status, region, and age filters only if needed to narrow common-name results.
- Review the record for custody status and facility location, then verify important location or legal-status questions with the institution because prisoners can move.
The NMCD search form is separate from local booking records. If someone was just arrested in Union County, call the Union County Sheriff's Office first. If the person has been sentenced or moved into state custody, the NMCD locator becomes the appropriate search channel.
Northeast New Mexico Correctional Facility Address and Contact
Northeast New Mexico Correctional Facility sits near Clayton, and NMCD's 2021 annual report describes it as four miles southeast of town. Use the NMCD facility address for prison business, legal mail, and money orders when NMCD rules say those items go to the facility. Visiting Someone at Northeast New Mexico Correctional Facility
The NMCD visitation page controls Northeast New Mexico Correctional Facility visiting. Visitors must be on the inmate's approved visitation list, and new visitation applications must be submitted every two years. In-person barrier visits at this facility are Monday through Friday and must be scheduled at least one week in advance. NMCD notes that visitors who travel long distances may be allowed a two-day option with two hours on the first day and two hours on the second day, on consecutive days, with the same visitors attending both days.
General population visits use two-hour blocks from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m. to noon, or 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Restrictive Housing in-person visits use the same blocks and are no-contact. Restrictive Housing inmates on disciplinary or PHD status are not allowed visits. NMCD lists no weekend visits for this facility, while most holidays have visitation. Facility-scheduled video visits are not offered; tablet video visits run through Smart Communications, and the visitor must first be approved through NMCD.
NMCD's visitation page is the source for the weekday barrier-visit schedule and long-distance two-day option at Northeast New Mexico Correctional Facility.
The screenshot supports the schedule table because visitation at this prison is governed by NMCD, not by Union County jail rules.

Mail, Phone, and Money at Northeast New Mexico Correctional Facility
The NMCD family resources page is the starting point for family mail, visitation, package, and constituent-service rules. NMCD began Smart Communications tablet mail on July 1, 2024. For ordinary personal mail to a prisoner at Northeast New Mexico Correctional Facility, use the inmate's name and NMCD number, the facility name, and the Smart Communications post office box in Seminole, Florida. This is a common source of confusion because the prison is in Clayton, but personal mail goes to Florida for processing.
Money orders and legal mail are different. NMCD's money-order instructions list electronic deposits through CorrectPay and say funds are typically posted within 48 hours; electronic senders do not need to be approved visitors. Approved visitors may also send money orders directly to the facility, with the inmate's full name and NMCD number on the envelope. For Northeast New Mexico Correctional Facility money orders, use 185 Dr. Michael Jenkins Road, Clayton, NM 88415. NMCD family services can be reached at CDFamilySrvcs@cd.nm.gov, 505-827-8710, or 505-231-4762.
NMCD family resources explain why mail, visitation, payment, and package questions should follow statewide prison rules for this facility.
The family resources page is especially relevant in Union County because the state prison is local geographically but is administered through statewide NMCD procedures.

Prison Admission and Classification at Northeast New Mexico Correctional Facility
Northeast New Mexico Correctional Facility does not handle street-arrest booking in the way a county jail does. For a Union County case, the local custody phase begins with arrest, jail intake, release or bond decisions, and court proceedings. If the person is convicted and sentenced to state prison, NMCD receives custody, handles reception and classification, and assigns a facility based on custody level, programming needs, bed availability, and other correctional factors.
NMCD family guidebook terminology treats classification as the method for determining custody level and programming needs. The official NMCD page's Level 2, Level 3, and RHU description matters because visitors, mail, phone access, housing, movement, and program access can vary by custody level and housing status. Always verify location and legal status with the institution or supervising office because NMCD warns that offenders move and central offices may not provide release information.
About Northeast New Mexico Correctional Facility
The Clayton prison has appeared under more than one name in older records. Current NMCD pages call it Northeast New Mexico Correctional Facility, while older NMCD documents and guidebook references may use Northeast New Mexico Detention Facility or the abbreviation NENMDF. The current page should use the NMCD facility name, while recognizing that older BJS/Census and NMCD annual-report materials may use the older detention-facility wording for the same Clayton state-prison site at 185 Dr. Michael Jenkins Road.
Programs are part of the facility's public profile. NMCD states that Northeast New Mexico Correctional Facility offers educational and reprogramming opportunities. The 2009-2010 NMCD annual report described programming with Mesalands Community College, including college-level education opportunities and green technology classes through a wind energy program. That older report also mentioned community-service recognition from the Clayton/Union County Chamber of Commerce. NMCD education contact material listed Daniel Arevalo as NENMCF Supervisor of Education, P.O. Box 626, Clayton, NM 88415, phone 575-374-4005 ext. 21062, fax 575-374-4010, and Daniel.Arevalo@cd.nm.gov.
Recent news should be handled as dated context, not as a substitute for official operating rules. Research noted a 2025 unexpected death reported by Source New Mexico and a 2025 fatal stabbing/fight report summarized by Corrections1 from Santa Fe New Mexican reporting. Those items relate to the state prison in Clayton, not to Union County Detention Center. Current visitation, mail, money, and custody-location questions should still be verified through NMCD and the facility.
Note: Verify custody location, visit approval, mail routing, and payment rules with NMCD before traveling or sending funds.
